The country has lost 270 thounsand hectares of natural forest. The Andean Region has lost 17% of its green area, as informed by Ideam-CO
Ederson Cabrera, the leader of forest monitoring from the Hidrology, Meterorology and Environmental Studies (IDEAM) from Colombia, explains that the reasons are mainly: “the praderization; followed by the development of infraestructure works, such as highways; the illegal agriculture; the illegal mining; the forest fires; and lastly, the expansion of cattle raising in the country”.
According to the Colombian Ministry of the Environment, the president Juan Manuel Santos, shall announce, next week, more concrete measures which must reduce substantially the deforestation in the Amazon.
